Bhogapuram International Airport Nearing Completion

Bhogapuram International Airport nearing completion

Bhogapuram International Airport, officially named Alluri Seetarama Raju International Airport (ASRIA), is nearing completion in Vizianagaram district. In its first phase, 84% of the construction will be ready, and the airport is scheduled for launch in June 2026.

The greenfield airport is being developed by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited. It will initially handle six million passengers per year. A second runway is planned in the second phase, while the final phase will expand the total capacity to 40 million passengers annually.

The project was first launched in 2015 by then Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. With an estimated cost of Rs. 4,700 crore, the Central government approved the project in 2016, and 2,700 acres of land were acquired for development.

Though initially targeted for 2023, the project faced delays during the YSRCP government. Work picked up momentum after the TDP government returned to power. Officials confirmed that operations will now begin by June 2026, six months earlier than the revised deadline of December 2026.

The airport is named after legendary freedom fighter Alluri Seetarama Raju, honouring his legacy. A state resolution to this effect was passed in November 2024. Once complete, ASRIA will meet global standards and is expected to be one of the best airports in the world.

Bhogapuram International Airport will serve as a major gateway for North Andhra and the Godavari districts, fulfilling a long-standing aspiration of the region. With advanced infrastructure and futuristic design, the project is poised to boost connectivity and regional development.
