In a shocking turn of events, a woman named Nguyen was sentenced to 120 months in prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release for committing one of the biggest marriage frauds, if not the biggest in the history of the United States.
Nguyen, 58, operated from Houston area and she is said to have been involved in 500 sham marriages. She orchestrated marriages between other nationals who seek USA green card and US residents.
She paid the U.S. citizens who participated as spouses between $15,000 and $20,000. The court heard that Vietnamese nationals would give Nguyen’s group $50,000 to $70,000 to marry a wife or husband in the United States to fraudulently obtain the green card.
She operated for more than four years and made several millions through these sham marriages. Fake marriage photo albums were used to make it appear as if they had an actual wedding ceremony. This was for easy visa processing.
Apart from the 120 months in jail, Nguyen was ordered to pay $334,605 in fines by the Court. The U.S District Judge Kenneth Hoyt passed the judgement.
