Vangaveeti Radha Krishna Devineni Avinash

Bezawada Politics and History are incomplete without the mention of the Vangaveeti and Devineni families.

It is a tale of how the personal rivalry between two families got caste and political colors.

The power struggle between the politically powerful led to bloodshed in Vijayawada and also had a bearing impact on the state’s political sphere. It also led to a big feud between the Kamma and Kapu communities in the state.

The last big names of the families – Vangaveeti Ranga were killed in the feud and Devineni Nehru prospered in politics.

Range passed away in 1988 and that led to a feud between Kamma and Kapu for years together. Congress used it cleverly to trouble TDP because the riots and Ranga’s Murder happened during NT Ramarao’s Government.

Devineni Nehru who was one of the accused (later acquitted by a court in 2002). After Vangaveeti Ranga’s murder, Devineni Nehru is in Congress for around nineteen years. He was with Jagan’s father, YSR from 1997 to his death in 2009.

He contested the 2004 and 2009 elections on a Congress ticket.

Interestingly, both Devineni Nehru and Vangaveeti Radha (Son of Radha) were in Congress in 2004 and won as MLAs.

Nehru joined TDP in 2014 after the elections but passed away in 2017.

Nehru’s son, Avinash is trying to make a mark in politics but is struggling.

In fact, lack of consistency always hurt the chances of Radha and Avinash – the heirs of the Vangaveeti and Devineni families.

After winning in 2004, Radha joined the Praja Rajyam Party in 2009 and lost that election. He would have easily won if he continued in Congress.

He joined the YSR Congress just before the 2014 elections and lost as MLA. TDP came to power and he had to remain in the Opposition. He joined TDP just before the 2019 elections but did not contest. Again TDP remained in the Opposition.

The case of Devineni Avinash is also similar.

Avinash was active in Congress as a Youth leader when Nehru was alive. He contested for Vijayawada Parliament in 2014 and lost. It was a blunder to contest on Congress ticket in 2014 as the party got decimated due to bifurcation and Jagan’s revolt.

In joined TDP along with his father after the 2014 elections. He contested from Gudivada Assembly in 2019 on a TDP ticket and lost again.

The last five years turned out to be decisive for both Avinash and Radha.

Radha remained politically inactive. He did not contest the 2024 election but did not leave TDP despite heavy pressure from his friends (Kodali Nani and Vallabhaneni Vamsi) who are in the YSR Congress. He is likely to be rewarded with an MLC and if lucky, he may become a Minister as well.

TDP leadership gave utmost importance to Avinash after the 2019 defeat. He was active in TDP for a few months after the election. But suddenly shifted to the YSR Congress. He behaved as if he is a YSR Congress-born leader and messed up relations with TDP too.

He contested for Vijayawada East constituency in the recent elections and lost with a whopping 49,640 votes margin.

Today, Radha has a bright future in the next five years while Avinash messed it up completely.
