The Central government has reportedly sanctioned Rs 275 crore for the second phase of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project. According to the latest information, Rs 125 crore of the allocation will be provided as a loan.
The Centre is said to have issued administrative orders for the funding. However, the official sanction document and the detailed breakup of the remaining Rs 150 crore have not yet been independently verified.
The Telangana government had earlier approved a proposal to expand the Hyderabad Metro network by 76.4 km across five corridors at an estimated cost of Rs 24,269 crore.
The proposed routes include Nagole to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Raidurg to Kokapet Neopolis, MGBS to Chandrayangutta, Miyapur to Patancheru and LB Nagar to Hayatnagar.
The expansion is intended to improve connectivity to the airport, Old City and rapidly developing residential and commercial areas. It is also expected to help reduce road congestion by providing more public transport options.
The project was proposed as a joint venture between the Central and Telangana governments. The state has been seeking the Centre’s approval and financial participation to move the expansion forward.
The reported Rs 275 crore allocation would represent a funding development for the project. However, clarity is still required on whether the sanction relates directly to construction, preliminary activities or another component of Metro Phase 2.
A formal confirmation of the allocation and its purpose is awaited.
