Shamshabad, known for Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, is set to become India’s first bullet train hub. Hyderabad will be the only city directly connecting four major metros through high speed rail corridors. This move is expected to reshape long distance travel from the city.
South Central Railways confirmed the development. Unlike Mumbai, Bengaluru, or Delhi, which connect to limited destinations, Hyderabad will link to multiple metros. The announcement highlights the city’s growing role in national rail infrastructure.
The plan, revealed during the Union Budget, includes a three way terminal at Shamshabad. It will connect Hyderabad to Pune, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Mumbai. This hub is expected to handle high passenger volumes efficiently.
The project is likely to begin in 2027-28. Travel time between Hyderabad and Bengaluru will reduce to two hours. The route will pass through Mahbubnagar, Kurnool, and Anantapur, offering faster regional connectivity.
Hyderabad to Chennai will take about 2.5 hours via Nalgonda, Amaravati, and Nellore. Hyderabad to Pune will be covered in 1.5 hours through Lingampally, Wadi, and Solapur. These routes aim to save significant travel time.
The Hyderabad Bengaluru Chennai corridor will link major IT and economic centres. It is expected to support growth in education, tourism, transport, and healthcare. High speed rail will offer a faster and more affordable option than air travel.
However, the Telangana government will need to bear its share of the project cost. Despite the expense, the long term benefits are expected to outweigh the investment.
