BRS working president K. T. Rama Rao (KTR) made a strong statement on Monday by arriving at Telangana Bhavan in an auto-rickshaw, drawing attention to the struggles of over 6 lakh auto drivers in the state.
The auto he rode belonged to Masrat Ali, the same driver whose vehicle Rahul Gandhi had used during the 2023 Assembly elections. KTR said the gesture was symbolic of the worsening condition of auto drivers under the current government.
He reminded that Rahul Gandhi had promised several welfare measures for auto drivers at that time, but none were implemented by the Revanth Reddy government. KTR also mentioned that Masrat Ali, who once owned two autos, had to sell them and now drives a rented vehicle, reflecting his dire situation.
KTR demanded that the government provide Rs 10 lakh compensation to the families of 161 auto drivers who died by suicide, citing neglect and financial distress.
Earlier in the day, Harish Rao also raised the same issue, urging Revanth Reddy to show the same level of commitment that CM Chandrababu Naidu has demonstrated in the neighbouring state.
