Delimitation 2026: 850 Lok Sabha Seats, What Does AP Get?

The Centre is preparing for a major political shift with plans to increase Lok Sabha seats and move ahead with delimitation.

As per current proposals, the strength of the Lok Sabha could increase from 543 to around 850 seats. This will be done through a fresh delimitation exercise that will redraw constituencies across the country.

At the centre of this process is the Delimitation Bill, 2026, which proposes the creation of a Delimitation Commission. This body will redraw Parliamentary and Assembly constituencies and also decide reservation of seats, including for women, SCs and STs.

One key aspect is its link to women’s reservation. Provisions under Articles 330A, 332A and 334A aim to provide around one-third reservation for women. The Commission will identify which seats will be reserved.

Once the process is completed, the new system is likely to come into effect by the 2029 elections.

This makes the Bill significant, as it not only increases seats but also enables implementation of women’s reservation.

For Andhra Pradesh, the impact could be mixed.

On the positive side, the state may get more Lok Sabha seats. This means better representation and more MPs to raise state issues at the national level.

New constituencies can also open space for new leaders and help parties expand their base.

Women’s reservation is another advantage, as it can improve representation and bring new leadership into politics.

However, there are concerns.

Delimitation is based on population, and states with higher population growth are likely to gain more seats. Since southern states like Andhra Pradesh have controlled population growth, the increase may be limited compared to northern states.

This could reduce the relative influence of Andhra Pradesh in Parliament.

There is also uncertainty, as the final seat allocation and boundaries will depend on the Delimitation Commission.

Overall, this is one of the biggest electoral changes in recent years. It combines seat expansion, constituency reshaping and women’s reservation into a single process.

For Andhra Pradesh, the final impact will depend on how seats are distributed. But one thing is clear, this move will reshape the political landscape ahead of 2029.
