Election Commission of India had shattered the hopes of political parties in the Telugu states by declaring that increasing MLA seats in both the Telugu States may not be possible. Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act promises the MLA seats in both the states to increase. They are proposed to increase from 175 to 225 in AP and 119 to 153 in Telangana.
Recently Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao met Chief Election Commissioner H.S. Brahma in New Delhi. However the later pointed out that unless the Union home ministry rectified relevant sections in the Act and brought an amendment, it was not possible for the EC to take the delimitation.
According to the Reorganization Act, the delimitation should happen according to Article 170 of the constitution. However the Article says that the Assembly seats across all the states in the country will not be touched until 2026. So an amendment must be brought to the Reorganization Act for the delimitation to happen.
