The long-awaited dream of Nellore citizens to have an airport is now moving closer to reality. The upcoming airport is planned at Damavaram in Dagadarthi mandal, and the state cabinet has already approved the draft RPF for the project.
The airport will be developed under a public private partnership model, with financial support from HUDCO for land acquisition. The state cabinet has also cleared several infrastructure facilities that will support the airport’s development in the region.
A total of 1379 acres have been set aside for the project. Out of this, 814 acres have already been acquired and handed over to the Airport Development Authority. Once the remaining land is secured, the construction phase will begin.
In 2019, then CM Chandrababu laid the foundation stone for the Damavaram airport and inaugurated the pylon. But after the Assembly elections that year, Jagan came to power and cancelled the project, leaving Nellore citizens deeply disappointed.
The proposal resurfaced in 2024 when Chandrababu Naidu returned to power. Union Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu backed his vision, giving fresh hope to Nellore citizens that their long-pending dream of an airport could soon be fulfilled.
Chandrababu, who had initiated the project earlier, treated it as a matter of prestige and pushed for cabinet approval. A central team visited Damavaram and urged the state government to speed up the land acquisition process.
With the latest cabinet nod, the pending land acquisition is set to be completed, and construction work at Damavaram airport is expected to begin soon.
