When the entire country thought coalition governments will be a norm of the day, Narendra Modi led BJP proved all wrong by forming the government at the center alone. While the North has tilted towards one party in the recent elections, Regional parties mostly enjoyed the pie in the Southern part. Especially Tamil Nadu was a fort of regional parties over several years. We get see either DMK or AIADMK at the helm alternatively in each of the elections. But with the jailing of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, the future of regional parties is suddenly in doubt.
Karunanidhi led DMK is already battered with some very big corruption charges and is currently on a political ventilator. The plight of the party is so bad that it can not be ready for elections even today in such favourable circumstances. And on the other side, Jayalalithaa can now can not contest elections for the next 10 years ( 4 years jail and 6 years after the release) and AIADMK future will be in bleak. With the subsiding of the regional parties we will have to see if National parties get settled in Tamil Nadu.
