The Home Ministry at the Centre has taken decision on removal of IPC section of the Indian Penal Code. This decision is taken with the consent from 18 States and 4 Union territories says the Central government. If this section is removed, then there won’t be any cases on those who attempt suicide.
The concept behind this decision is not to further torture the already disturbed people who had taken the suicide decision to end life. Under IPC section 309, any person who attempts suicide would have to face imprisonment upto one year. The Central Law Commission ‘Humanisation and De-criminalisation of Attempt to Suicide’ had made some recommendations to the Centre.
Then Centre asked for the opinion of the States and Union Territories on the matter. 18 states and 4 Union Territoties responded in the favour of removal of 309 section. Henceforth, suicide attempt wouldn’t be a crime according to Indian laws andwhat is remaining is to make necessary amendments to the Indian Penal code to remove this section.
