TG Speaker Seeks Time From SC: Defecting MLAs

Telangana Speaker on MLA defection case

The Telangana government is moving slowly on the issue of the ten defecting MLAs. The Supreme Court’s deadline of October 31 ended on Friday without a final decision.

Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar has questioned only four of the ten MLAs so far. The Court had suggested that the Speaker could act against those who fail to appear for inquiry.

Instead, the Speaker has now asked for two more months to finish the investigation. The Assembly Secretary has approached the Supreme Court to request this extension on the Speaker’s behalf.

The BRS had earlier moved the High Court, seeking disqualification of the ten MLAs who won on BRS tickets but switched sides soon after the 2023 elections. Later, the party approached the Supreme Court, which directed the Speaker to complete the inquiry and take a decision within three months, setting October 31 as the deadline.

That deadline has passed, yet no action has been taken. Both BRS and Congress are now waiting for the Supreme Court’s next move on the matter.
