The loan waiver promise of TDP before the elections has put Andhra Pradesh government and the bankers in the state at loggerheads. The goverment accuses bankers of delaying the submission of farmers’ lists who are eligible for the loan waiver. The government previously set September 15th as the deadline for the submission of the lists but the work is not even 60% complete till date.
While government accuses banks of not putting enough time in to the work, the bankers say the government is frequently changing the format of the lists database that is causing the delay. They say whenever the format is changed, they have to start the work from the start. Some banks in the rural areas also complained of not having internet connection required for making the lists, the government even provided them with the internet connection to get the work done. So far only Andhra Bank and State Bank of India have met the expectations of the government regarding the submission of eligible farmers’ lists.
