With local body elections approaching in Andhra Pradesh, the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has filed two petitions in the High Court. The party has raised concerns about election security and alleged difficulties faced by its candidates in getting the required documents.
In its first petition, the YSRCP has asked for central paramilitary forces to be deployed at polling stations. It has also sought 24-hour webcasting and CCTV surveillance at every polling centre. The party wants micro-observers to monitor the process and has asked the government to provide special security to its candidates. It has also requested that polling place should be under the Election Commission’s supervision without the involvement of local police.
The second petition deals with the problems faced by candidates while collecting documents needed to file their nominations. The party alleges that officials are delaying caste certificates, No Objection Certificates (NOCs) and certificates confirming that candidates have no pending dues. It has asked the court to direct revenue and municipal officials to issue these documents without further delay.
The petitions have added to the political activity ahead of the local body elections. The YSRCP says these steps are necessary to ensure a fair contest. However, its demands have also raised questions about the party’s confidence in the existing election arrangements.
There is speculation that the party could use these concerns to challenge the election process or justify a possible boycott. However, the party has not confirmed any decision to stay away from the elections.
The High Court’s response and the Election Commission’s next steps will be crucial as Andhra Pradesh prepares for the local electoral battle.
