BOTTOM LINE
Barring Few Glitches, Appreciable Attempt
OUR RATING
2.75/5
What Is the Film About?
Jaya Krishna (Suhas) and Deepthi (Chandini Chowdary) study together in an Engineer college. While Deepthi is beautiful and from a well-to-do family, Jaya Krishna is dark and hails from a poor background. While colour does not stop them from falling in love, it brings them many problems they could ever imagine.
Performance?
We have seen several comedians try their luck in the hero roles in the past. They either tried loud comedy or too much heroism. But Suhas did not commit the mistake. He chose a role that allows him to perform like how a regular hero does. He did not leave his forte – comedy and as well as performed well in emotional sequences. There is a scope for improvement but he is getting there.
Direction?
Sandeep Raj came up with some fine dialogues. The direction has been decent as well. The first half of the film is patchy. The usual love story and some subplots feel like a routine. We get to feel that the story is not moving. But things are not like you are bored to death. There is an occasional comedy that keeps things going.
The second half is better than the first and saves the film. Even though we feel Sunil’s performance is forced, the story gets moving after his entry in the second half. While some people may feel it is overdramatic, the team may have wanted to convey their point about colour discrimination. The story is intentionally timed to the 90s when there is not much awareness as today about such disparities. It is appreciable that they did not try to give a cinematic good ending. Finally, you feel Colour Photo is a sincere attempt. You will get to enjoy it despite the not so good first half.
Others?
Chandini Chowdary is an experienced actress if we also consider her short film career. She sleepwalked through the character which has that tinge of innocence. It is rare that a heroine gets a character with such substance and she made use of it completely. She is decent in the emotional sequences towards the end as well.
Sunil is seen in a character which should invoke anger and hate in the audience. It is such kind of character any established hero would hesitate but Sunil did not mind that. At times, his act feels like forced may be due to the image we already know. Viva Harsha is one of the highlights of the film. He performed really well in a character that will be memorable in his career.

Alternative Take
There is a lot of underplay in the first half probably due to the inferiority complex of the lead character. Things would have been a lot better if things move faster there and some more comedy is stuffed.
