EC Strict Over Duplicate Votes In AP

Election Commission of India

The Election Commission of India has taken serious steps against duplicate votes in Andhra Pradesh. They’ve directed district collectors to carefully review all new applications and take legal action against anyone found applying for voting rights in multiple places. This move aims to prevent individuals from registering as voters in more than one location or state, which is against the law.

In response to a complaint, the Chief Electoral Officer instructed district collectors to verify new applications after reports of people registered as electors in Telangana trying to enroll in Andhra Pradesh. To maintain the fairness of the electoral roll, strict guidelines have been provided to prevent misuse of the process. The CEO emphasized that a person can only be registered as a voter in one place within an assembly constituency.

Warning against providing false information or hiding previous registrations, the CEO stated that such actions would result in penalties under the Representation of People Act, 1950. The district collectors were directed to conduct field verification for all new applications and focus on reasons for previous non-enrollment.
