A suspected honey-trapping and extortion racket has been busted in Assam’s Jorhat. The police arrested five people, including alleged mastermind Moromi Das Neog, in connection with a blackmail case involving a private bank manager from Tinsukia.
According to Jorhat Police, the complainant came in contact with Moromi through Instagram in July, and their interaction eventually developed into a relationship. In August, she allegedly invited him to Jorhat and took him to a rented house in the Seuni Ali area. The bank manager reportedly arrived around 1 am, where two men allegedly entered the premises and recorded him in a compromising situation.
Police said the alleged accused then threatened to circulate the video on social media and share it with the victim’s family if he did not pay up. The group initially demanded Rs. 2 lakh, which the bank manager allegedly paid. Another Rs. 1 lakh was subsequently extracted from him. The accused later allegedly demanded another Rs. 5 lakh, following which the victim approached Jorhat Police on October 2.
Police subsequently arrested Sanjib Das and Ankit Paul, followed by Moromi Das Neog, Baby Bora and her husband Ankit Bora. All five have been arrested in connection with the case, while the accused were produced before a court.
Investigators also recovered obscene video clips and screenshots of financial transactions from the accused’s mobile phones. Police suspect the group may have targeted other financially well-off individuals and are examining the digital evidence to identify potential victims and determine the wider extent of the alleged racket.
