Delta Airline Pays 2.4 Lakhs To Passengers

Delta Airlines recently made headlines by offering passengers a significant sum to voluntarily give up their seats.

This unusual incident occurred on a flight from Seattle to Palm Springs when a technical issue forced the airline to replace a larger aircraft with a smaller one. As a result, there were fewer available seats, prompting Delta to offer compensation to passengers willing to give up theirs.

A passenger shared their experience on the social discussion platform Reddit, describing the unexpected offer. Initially, the airline proposed $1,000 (approximately ₹87,000) along with a hotel voucher.

However, as some passengers refused, Delta increased the offer. Eventually, some travelers were offered $2,200 (around ₹1.83 lakh), while one fortunate passenger managed to negotiate $2,500.

The highest payout went to an elderly couple, who demanded and received $2,800 (approximately ₹2.4 lakh) to give up their seats.

Delta Airlines later explained that overbooked flights often lead to such compensation offers. According to Delta’s policies, when a flight is oversold, the airline first seeks volunteers willing to take a later flight in exchange for financial compensation.

Many airlines follow similar practices, especially when they sell more tickets than available seats or need to switch aircraft. Some passengers see this as a profitable opportunity and willingly accept compensation.

The company, surely saved it’s credit with it’s customers. The problem however remains in the fact that the situation came up in the first place.
