Hyd Police Warn: Dark Side of Festival Shopping

Cybercrime warning on Diwali online scams

Online shopping has made festive buying fast and easy, but it has also created new opportunities for fraudsters. With Diwali approaching, shoppers excited by discounts and “limited-time offers” are increasingly falling for scams disguised as festive deals.

The Hyderabad Cybercrime Police has issued a public warning about a sharp rise in online shopping scams during the festive season. Fraudsters are setting up fake websites, mobile apps, and social media ads promising heavy discounts or fake “lucky draw” prizes.

Many unsuspecting buyers end up downloading malicious apps or transferring money for products that never get delivered. In several cases, users shared personal banking details or installed harmful APK files that gave scammers access to their phones.

Authorities have urged people to stay alert avoid unverified links, never share OTPs or card details, and shop only on trusted e-commerce platforms. Any suspicious transactions should be reported immediately to the National Cybercrime Helpline (1930).

While online shopping offers convenience, experts say it also demands caution. As festive scams increase every year, digital awareness remains the best defence against frauds that use celebration as a cover.
