Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy sparked a huge social media debate with his controversial statement saying Indians should work 70 hours a week to boost the country’s economy.

He was heavily criticized for his idea but Narayana Murthy continued to defend it on various occasions. Once again, he stood by his words during a recent event in Kolkata.

Speaking at the event, Narayana Murthy revealed that he told Infosys employees to learn by comparing themselves with the best global companies. “Once we compare with global companies, I can tell you that we Indians have a lot to do,” said Narayana Murthy.

Narayana Murthy asserted the need to set higher aspirations, pointing out that 80 crore Indians receive free ration, which indicates widespread poverty.

“If we are not in a position to work hard, who will work hard?” Narayana Murthy questioned.

In an earlier interview, Narayana Murthy stated that productivity among Indians is low compared to other countries. He opined that Indian youth should work harder by committing to 70-hour workweeks.

He opined that Indian employees should work like how Japan and Germany rebuilt their nations by working hard after the devastation of World War II.

However, many people criticized Murthy’s statements. They argued that employees are already experiencing mental stress due to heavy workloads. They pointed out that increasing working hours further would negatively impact the physical and mental health of employees.
