Rishabh ODI Future in Danger? Twist Before 2027 WC

Pant Samson ODI competition

Rishabh Pant is facing strong competition in India’s ODI setup as Sanju Samson emerges as a serious contender ahead of the 2027 World Cup. This has added fresh debate around the wicketkeeper position.

According to reports, the team management led by Gautam Gambhir and the selectors have begun planning for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Samson is now being closely considered as a potential replacement for Pant.

Pant’s poor form in the ongoing Indian Premier League season has raised concerns. The Lucknow Super Giants captain has scored just 189 runs in eight matches at an average of 27.

Along with his batting struggles, Pant’s captaincy with Lucknow Super Giants has also come under scrutiny. These factors have placed his position in India’s ODI squad under pressure.

At present, KL Rahul remains India’s first choice wicketkeeper in ODIs, with Pant as backup. Pant has not played an ODI since 2024, which has further increased uncertainty around his role.

On the other hand, Samson’s recent performances have impressed selectors. He played a key role in India’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 triumph and delivered strong IPL performances, including two centuries for Chennai Super Kings.

Samson also has an advantage in ODI numbers. He has scored 510 runs in 16 matches at an average of 56.66, while Pant has 871 runs in 37 matches at an average of 33.50.

With India set to play around 20 ODIs before the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, including a home series against Afghanistan starting June 14, the team may test new combinations.

If Pant fails to improve his form, he could lose his place in the ODI side. There is also a possibility that he may be pushed out of India’s white ball plans, especially as he is not part of the current T20 setup.
