T20I Debut to ODI WC Spot? Too Much, Too Soon?

Can a player who has played just one T20I already be considered for a World Cup?

That question is now being discussed after former India spinner Laxman Sivaramakrishnan backed 15 year old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for a place in India’s 2027 ODI World Cup plans if he continues to perform well in T20I format.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi earned his India call up after impressive performances in the IPL, the Under 19 World Cup, and for India A.

He recently became India’s youngest T20I debutant and is already being seen as one of the country’s brightest young talents.

Sivaramakrishnan said the youngster should be backed by the team management and given enough opportunities in white ball cricket.

According to him, if Vaibhav continues to score runs in T20Is, he deserves an ODI chance as well.

Despite, the comments have also sparked debate among cricket fans. Many on social media believe it is far too early to discuss a place in India’s 2027 ODI World Cup squad.

Vaibhav has played just one international match and should first prove himself consistently at the highest level.

Several fans have also pointed to Prithvi Shaw, who had a dream start to his career but could not maintain that momentum. They believe every young cricketer has a different journey, and unnecessary hype only adds pressure.

If Vaibhav keeps performing, an ODI debut and eventually a World Cup opportunity will come naturally.

For now, the focus should be on letting the teenager build his own journey instead of rushing the conversation after just one T20I appearance.
