VVS Laxman to Get Powerful BCCI Role? What’s Behind It?

VVS Laxman BCCI Director of Cricket role

VVS Laxman‘s role in Indian cricket could be about to change in a big way. The BCCI has reportedly offered the current Centre of Excellence head the Director of Cricket role, which could give him control over the selectors, team management and players.

The timing comes with uncertainty around Ajit Agarkar’s future and reports of tension involving senior players such as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Laxman already has a strong relationship with India’s senior players. The BCCI could therefore see him as someone who can handle issues between the dressing room, selectors and team management before they become bigger controversies.

Agarkar’s tenure as chief selector is reportedly set to end in September, although he is said to be seeking an extension until the 2027 ODI World Cup. Zaheer Khan is also reportedly being considered for the role.

The Rohit situation has made things even more interesting. Reports claimed selectors had doubts over his 2027 World Cup future, while BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia later dismissed those reports.

A senior BCCI official reportedly had to intervene during the England tour to resolve the situation.

But if Laxman gets control over selectors, players and team management, how powerful will his position actually become.
