Ajit Agarkar’s future as India’s chief selector is now under discussion. Reports claim the BCCI is looking at other options instead of giving him another extension when his current term ends in September 2026.
VVS Laxman’s name is among the frontrunners if the board decides to make a change.
The reports come after India’s tour of England, where the discussion around Rohit Sharma’s ODI future reportedly did not go down well with some BCCI officials.
While nothing has been decided yet, the board is expected to discuss the matter during its Annual General Meeting in September.
Despite the reports, Agarkar’s chances are still alive. India’s upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka could play a part in the board’s final decision.
Agarkar is also understood to be keen on continuing until the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Since taking charge in 2023, Agarkar’s selection committee has seen India win the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups and the 2025 Champions Trophy. The committee also picked several new faces while handling the retirements of senior players across formats.
If the BCCI decides to move in a different direction, VVS Laxman could be the leading choice.
He is currently working as the Head of Cricket at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence and has already worked with several young Indian players.
The big question now is will the BCCI continue with Ajit Agarkar, or is VVS Laxman set for a new role?
