Since the beginning of this year, although one or two biggies have made an impact at the box office, this year has been ruled by medium-budget movies. In this scenario, with around 9 medium-budget movies releasing this Friday, it seems to be an overcrowded weekend in South Indian cinema.
Out of these 9 releases, 5 films such as Arya’s bilingual film Ananthan Kaadu, directed by Jiyen Krishnakumar; Arjun Das’s Con City, Heartin, Andharan and Angikaaram are from the Kollywood industry. Three films, such as Panchamukhi, Garuda, and Balaramana Dinagalu are from the Kannada industry and one film, Uyir, is from the Malayalam industry.
Amongst these films, many trackers suggest that Arya’s Ananthan Kaadu, Arjun Das’s Con City and the Malayalam film Uyir have huge potential to emerge as surprise blockbusters.
This is because of the hype these films are carrying; the Ananthan Kaadu team has done massive promotions and somehow generated significant buzz for the film amongst the audience. Additionally, since Arya has earned goodwill among the audience, as he always delivers something unique and is a dedicated actor, evidenced by the success of Sarpatta Parambarai, they claim that if Ananthan Kaadu acquires a positive response from the audience, it will perform well at the box office.
Meanwhile, Arjun Das’s Con City already holds decent expectations among the audience because the recently released trailer from the film received super positive responses and with the trailer it was evident that the film is a dark comedy genre of film. Especially since comedy films always make an impact at the box office irrespective of their size, many people believe that Con City also has a strong possibility of becoming a hit.
On the other hand, because the Malayalam industry has consistently delivered solid murder mystery cop films for the last few years, Roshan Mathew’s Uyir holds decent expectations and is expected to be another solid cop mystery from the industry.
However, with multiple releases this week, it remains to be seen which films will satisfy the expectations of the audience and emerge as the winner in this race upon their release this weekend.
