Vishal‘s debut directorial venture Magudam, starring himself, Anjali and Dushara Vijayan in the lead roles, was released in theatres yesterday (August 14th) and has received negative reviews from audiences and critics alike.
The shooting of Magudam started at the beginning of last year and initially, the film was helmed by Ravi Arasu. However, due to some issues between Ravi Arasu and Vishal, Ravi Arasu opted out of the project. Consequently, Vishal transitioned into the director’s seat and took control of the project, while still giving story credit to Ravi Arasu.
Ever since Vishal announced that he was debuting as a director with this project, it created huge expectations among audiences and Kollywood fans eagerly awaited to witness what Vishal, as a director, was going to offer in Magudam.
Unfortunately, Magudam ended up as a terrible disappointment. Many viewers, after watching the film, responded on social media that Magudam is the worst Kollywood film of the year and suggested that the screenplay was very poor.
Furthermore, they noted that the shot composition was very bad and that most of the scenes felt draggy. They claim that Vishal has failed as both a director and an actor in this film, advising him to focus only on acting instead.
Already facing a clash with Suriya’s Vishwanath and Sons, Magudam had acquired only a minimal number of screens worldwide. Now, due to the poor word of mouth, no one is showing interest in watching Magudam in theatres and the film is struggling to sustain itself.
Meanwhile, since Suriya’s Vishwanath and Sons has received positive responses from general audiences, the film is gaining huge momentum at the box office. Consequently, many theatres have started replacing the screens allocated for Magudam with Vishwanath and Sons.
Therefore, with these terrible reviews, it remains to be seen how Magudam will perform at the box office in the following days and whether the film will at least be able to achieve breakeven in its final run.
