After the box office success of Thalaivan Thalaivii last year, two long-pending Vijay Sethupathi projects released within a week and failed badly. The back to back releases surprised fans and trade circles, especially given the actor’s strong recent form.
On January 30, Vijay Sethupathi’s experimental film Gandhi Talks, made without spoken dialogue, arrived in theatres. Despite decent pre-release curiosity, mixed reviews killed momentum. The film failed to attract audiences and quickly disappeared from theatres.
Just seven days later, Kadhal Kadhai Sollava directed by Sanil Kalathil, released on February 6. The film featured Vijay Sethupathi, Jayaram, Nakhul, and Athmeeya Rajan. However, the release went largely unnoticed and turned into a washout in many centres.
Viewers who watched Kadhal Kadhai Sollava shared highly negative reviews online. Several called it one of Vijay Sethupathi’s weakest films in recent years, further hurting its already poor box office performance.
Following these releases, social media users noted the impact on Vijay Sethupathi’s career momentum. After the success of Maharaja and the 100-crore hit Thalaivan Thalaivii, many felt that releasing shelved projects damaged his credibility.
It now remains to be seen how Vijay Sethupathi responds to the setbacks of Gandhi Talks and Kadhal Kadhai Sollava. Fans hope future releases will be better planned to protect the actor’s strong market position.
