A Qatar Airways flight from Doha to New York has gone viral after a passenger alleged she faced 14 hours of harassment. The woman, identified as Essie, shared video clips online that quickly spread across platforms, sparking global debate.
Passenger’s Ordeal in Economy
Essie claimed the elderly woman next to her repeatedly crossed boundaries. She leaned over, pressed her legs against hers, and even lay on the cabin floor. At one point, the woman allegedly sat on Essie and gestured with a metal meal knife.
Limited Action by Airline Crew
Despite Essie’s repeated complaints, Qatar Airways staff reportedly took only minor steps. The elderly passenger was shifted to the aisle seat, but her behaviour continued. The flight was neither diverted nor formally restrained, and no law enforcement was involved.
Viral Videos Spark Debate
Essie’s recordings have crossed ten million views. Viewers criticised Qatar Airways for not ensuring safety, while some argued flight attendants face challenges when elderly or confused travellers misbehave in unpredictable ways during long flights.
Call for Better Safety Measures
A passenger should not feel unsafe for hours without intervention. While crew limitations exist, airlines must prioritise protection. Treating such cases as minor can have lasting consequences for those trapped in uncomfortable and threatening situations mid-flight.
