There has been a recent surge in the number of Indian nationals who renounced their Indian citizenship for a Western country. The attraction of a better life opportunity drives hundreds of thousands of Indians outside. While a section of that population aims to return back to India at some point, there are many who accept this new country as their new homeland. The perks attached with the citizenship status is another reason why so many people apply for it.
In a recently published data from OECD International Migration Outlook 2023, it has been revealed that the United States is the primary target of these Indians and over 50 percent of these people become American citizens after leaving India. A total of 56,085 applications from Indians were processed in the year 2021.
After the USA, Australia was the second most popular destination for Indians getting a foreign citizenship. Canada ranks third in the list with over 20,000 citizenship applications. Indians constitute the biggest nationality group applying for citizenship in Canada.
Other than these countries, the United Kingdom is also one of the biggest destinations for Indians. Indians are the biggest group of applicants there as well.
