An Indian-origin woman is being denied entry to her homeland as her mother is battling for her life in India. A tragic incident as she claims it is all because of her political inclination.
Kshama Sawant, an NRI activist living in the US, took to X to share her grievances with the Indian government as they denied her visa twice. Despite sharing all the medical documents of her 82-year-old ailing mother she was not allowed to travel back home.

Sawant claims this is because she has been an avid critic of the Modi government, especially over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and NRC. She even led the charge in Seattle’s City Council to condemn the CAA in 2020.
This is part of a dangerous trend as earlier Professor Ashok Swain also had his OCI status revoked for criticizing India. In her viral post, Sawant started a petition to “stop this retaliation.”

The visa policy has become a political weapon that should be avoided especially in such emergency cases. In the end, Sawant is just a daughter in distress, wishing to meet her mother in her final days.
India's PM Modi & the BJP government are denying me a visa to see my ill mother.
I’m not alone. Modi has retaliated against other activists & journalists, denying or revoking entry into India.
Sign the petition. Urge Modi to stop this retaliation. https://t.co/pnLOLW5IHb
