Small Telugu OTT Show Heads to Netflix: Can It Go Bigger?

Gurtukostunnayi Netflix release

Nostalgia-driven stories set around school days and childhood memories often find a decent audience on OTT, and Gurtukostunnayi seems to be the latest addition to that space. The series, which started streaming on ETV Win on July 3, is now set for a wider release on Netflix from July 10.

Starring Viraj Ashwin and Yashashree Rao, the series appears to have found some traction among viewers who enjoy soft emotional dramas built around school-life memories and coming-of-age themes. After its initial run on ETV Win, the show is now moving to Netflix, which should help it reach a much larger audience.

ETV Win has been trying to build a stronger original content lineup, and if one of its recent titles is getting picked up by Netflix so quickly, it suggests the series has generated at least some positive attention in the OTT space.

Directed by Vinod Gali and produced by Sharath Chandra Naidu, Gurtukosthunnayi leans heavily on nostalgia. The series reportedly uses familiar elements like school friendships, first crushes, cycle rides, cassettes, and old-day routines to create an emotional connect with viewers. That kind of material is not new, but when handled with some honesty, it usually works with a section of digital audiences.

Netflix has confirmed that the series will begin streaming in Telugu on July 10, with dubbed versions in Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam expected later.

The bigger question now is whether the series can connect beyond the Telugu audience.

Shows like this often work well when they feel personal and rooted, but the same nostalgia may not translate equally for everyone across languages. So, the Netflix release will be a better test of whether Gurthukostunnayi is just a small OTT success in Telugu or whether it has enough emotional pull to travel further.

Either way, moving from ETV Win to Netflix within a week of release is a solid boost for the series and gives it a second life with a much wider digital audience.
