ICAI Bullies Upcoming Netflix Release

Can a person’s personal choices overshadow the image of the profession they belong to? If that is so, many people in every other profession will bring great shame and no profession would be looked at the same way. It seems ridiculous when ICAI, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, blames a show that portrays a CA in a dark-comedic light.

The whole incident takes place around the Netflix series Tribhuvan Mishra CA Topper, releasing on 12 July. From the maker of Mirzapur, Puneet Krishna the show has Manav Kaul and Tillotama Shome in lead with Subhrajyoti Barat, Shweta Basu, Naina Sareen, Sumit Gulati and Faisal Malik. It showcases a CA badly hit by bank recession taking up sex work. The plot is quirky and the show presents the lead in ludicrous scenarios that are an outcome of his bad choices.

But if every other association started taking offence for what a character representing their profession did, films would have to devoid characters of their profession before attributing the plotline to them. How weird is that? With fundamentalists already scrutinizing films vehemently, organisations like ICAI further curb the scope of creativity.

Interestingly, CA students took a dig at ICAI’s X post about the legal case against Tribhuvan Mishra CA Topper, pointing out that people with glass houses shouldn’t hit stones at other’s home. The ICAI has often failed at being of help to the CA students and made their professional journeys miserable with their neglect. Had they used half of this energy in students’ welfare, it could make a huge difference in the society!
