Netflix shared an interesting detail on X as Silsila began appearing on its home screens. The 1981 classic starring Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, and Rekha remains loved for its visuals and timeless songs. Yet many viewers still miss one key fact about the film’s legacy.
Silsila marks the beginning of Javed Akhtar’s journey as a lyricist. Netflix India posted a screenshot of the film’s opening credits that features his name as Javed. The post reminded viewers of the turning point that shaped his creative path.
Yash Chopra, who directed Silsila, convinced Javed Akhtar to write a song for the film. The result was the iconic ‘Dekha Ek Khwab,’ a song that continues to feature on playlists even today. It marked a shift from his private poetry to full-fledged songwriting.
Before this, Javed Akhtar wrote poems only for a close circle of friends, which included Yash Chopra. When Yash looked for a lyricist, Lata Mangeshkar recommended Javed’s name. He accepted the challenge and delivered a rich romantic track set in Holland’s tulip fields.
Javed Akhtar’s career shows a rare mix of discipline, creativity, and reinvention. He stepped into songwriting with hesitation, yet his work in Silsila became a milestone that still influences Indian film music.
