Netflix’s decision to stream popular Indian shows like CID and The Kapil Sharma Show has sparked confusion among viewers. Fans are wondering why these once cable-based programmes are now locked behind a premium OTT paywall.
Director Anurag Kashyap recently shared his thoughts on this shift. He recalled how shows like CID, Crime Patrol, and The Kapil Sharma Show once brought families together for evening entertainment a shared experience now being rebranded for digital audiences.
Kashyap pointed out that platforms like JioCinema, Disney+ Hotstar, and MX Player have long served the masses with lower prices and even free streaming options. In contrast, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video target a smaller, premium base with higher subscription costs.
He believes Netflix is trying to expand its reach by adding popular mass-audience shows while maintaining premium pricing. But by placing once “free” content behind a paywall, the platform risks alienating the very audience that made those shows iconic.
For many, the move feels counterproductive. Viewers can still enjoy CID or The Kapil Sharma Show on TV through cheaper channel bundles, making the OTT shift seem unnecessary. Some call Netflix’s strategy flawed, while others see it as a nostalgic marketing attempt.
By adding trusted favourites, Netflix may hope to capture older TV audiences through familiarity. Yet, the bigger question remains is this a smart business strategy or an overconfident gamble that misunderstands its core audience?
