Spotify’s Bold Move: OTT Platforms Next in Line?

Spotify chat feature inside the app

Spotify is rolling out a new in-app messaging feature that will allow users to chat with friends while enjoying music. The feature will be available only to users aged 16 and above.

With this update, users can share music, playlists, albums, podcasts, and more—all within the app. It aims to enhance music discovery while allowing friends to connect over shared interests.

While many Spotify users are excited about the feature, others have suggested that a similar tool could work well on OTT platforms like Prime Video and JioHotstar.

These platforms are currently facing user backlash due to frequent bugs and excessive advertisements. In contrast, Netflix continues to attract praise for its vast content library and user experience.

Adding a community or messaging feature to OTT apps might give viewers a space to discuss films and shows right after watching them. This could also help distract users from ongoing issues like rentals and ad interruptions.

Platforms like JioHotstar and Prime Video may consider such features as part of a broader strategy to improve user engagement. However, with every new feature comes a risk—privacy, moderation, and user experience challenges must be addressed.

Only time will tell whether Netflix or other OTT platforms will follow Spotify’s path and offer in-app communication tools.
