A source has revealed new information about Khalnayak Returns. Sanjay Dutt personally met director Rajkumar Santoshi and asked him to direct the upcoming sequel. However, Santoshi politely said no to the offer. He told Dutt that he is completely busy with his upcoming project, Partition 1947, and wants to focus only on that film.
Behind the scenes, industry experts are sharing a different story. They say that Santoshi turned down the offer because he felt the sequel does not have much potential. He thinks that making a sequel to a Subhash Ghai film is highly risky, and it could hurt his reputation if the movie flops at the box office.
Dutt wanted Santoshi because the director knows how to make massy cinema for the general audience. Santoshi is famous for directing iconic action movies with Sunny Deol, including Ghayal, Ghatak, and Damini, which were all huge hits. The actor believed this great track record made him perfect for the job. Now that Santoshi has declined, everyone is waiting to see which filmmaker will take up the project.
The basic plot of the movie comes from a very surprising place. Dutt revealed in an interview that the actual story idea was given to him by fellow prisoners during his time in Tihar jail. It will be interesting to see how this project shapes up without Santoshi on board.
As per trade experts, Khalnayak Returns might face a tough time ahead anyway. They feel that Khalnayak does not have the same massive popularity in pop culture that a movie like Gadar has. Because of this, they believe its chances of succeeding at the box office are quite low.
