Actress Soha Ali Khan recently shared that her career could have taken a very different turn if she had starred in Amol Palekar’s Paheli (2005). Speaking to Mashable India, Soha revealed that she was first approached as the lead actress for the film before Rani Mukerji came on board.
At the time, Soha was working at Citibank, drawing a stable salary and managing rent of ₹17,000 a month. The opportunity seemed significant enough for her to quit her corporate job and pursue acting full time. According to her, director Amol Palekar had explained that the film’s schedule would require months of commitment. With little understanding of how Bollywood functioned, she did not realise that a verbal offer without a contract offered no security.
Things changed when Shah Rukh Khan joined Paheli as the male lead. Initially delighted by the news, Soha was later informed that she had been dropped from the project and that Rani Mukerji would play the role instead. The sudden setback left her questioning her career move and even worrying about basic survival. “What do I do now? How do I pay my rent?” she recalled.
Although she later debuted in Dil Maange More (2004), Soha’s story of losing Paheli highlights the harsh realities of the film industry, where excitement and dreams often collide with uncertainty and insecurity.
