With only a few days left for the release of Thamma, writer Niren Bhatt has revealed key details about the film’s concept. The movie is part of Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Horror Comedy Universe (MHCU).
In a recent interview, Niren said Thamma draws inspiration from Indian folk tales and mythology. He explained that every country has its own legends about vampires, and India’s stories are no different.
He also mentioned the classic Vikram and Betal tale, where Betal returns to the tree if the king answers wrongly. Bhatt said this connection shows that the idea of vampires existed in Indian storytelling long before Western versions became popular.
Niren compared the audience’s expectations for Thamma to The Vampire Diaries, calling it “India’s version with roots in history.” He added that the themes explored in the film existed centuries before the Western adaptations.
Along with its supernatural setting, Thamma will feature a strong romantic angle. The trailer has received positive feedback, and trade experts expect a strong opening during the Diwali release thanks to the franchise’s popularity.
MHCU’s last release, Stree 2, was a massive blockbuster. Now, all eyes are on Thamma to see if it can match that level of success and expand Maddock’s growing horror comedy universe.
