Kapkapiii, a Hindi remake of the 2023 Malayalam hit Romancham, is set to release on May 23. Directed by the late Sangeeth Sivan, the horror-comedy stars Tusshar Kapoor and Shreyas Talpade, known for their comic timing in the Golmaal series.
Originally slated for a June release, the film was delayed due to Sivan’s passing during post-production.
However, there’s no denying that horror comedy remains quite a challenging genre in India. When Stree was released, the audience loved it. The same happened with its sequel. But what happened to other Maddock films like Munjya? It got only mixed reactions from the audiences.
A few days ago, another horror film, The Bhootni, fell flat and failed to win the hearts of the audience. Even the presence of a stellar star cast like Mouni Roy and Sanjay Dutt could not save it.
Now, Tusshar and Shreyas, along with the makers of Kapkapii are taking the risk and releasing the film in some time. Not sure about the genuine laughs, but there’s high doubt that the film will give any chills.
Despite the presence of amazing VFX backups, Bollywood’s films fall short of good screenplay, especially when making horror dramas.
Following the success of Stree 2 and Munjya, many production companies have begun trying their luck on the same genre. But the success won’t repeat every time if you don’t have a proper story and entertaining elements.
Even if Kapkapii manages to leave an impression, it is expected to face a heavy competition from Raid 2, Final Destination: Bloodlines, and Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning.
With around a week left for release, the makers need to work on better promotional strategies if they are aiming to get a positive response at the box office. Let’s see what happens with the film on the day of release.
