Coolie vs War 2 — Yash Raj Films Playing Dirty?

This Independence Day weekend will see a major box office face-off between two highly anticipated films—War 2 and Coolie. Yash Raj Films has made a calculated move by locking down all 33 IMAX screens in India exclusively for War 2 for the first couple of weeks.

This means Coolie won’t be available in IMAX at all during its crucial opening phase, which puts it at a disadvantage in terms of premium screen exposure.

War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan and NTR, is being marketed as a big-ticket action film within the YRF Spy Universe. But the early reactions to its teaser have been mixed.

Fans have pointed out the lack of originality, underwhelming VFX, and a general sense of repetition from earlier spy films. NTR’s Bollywood debut was expected to be a standout moment, but the teaser hasn’t quite sparked the excitement many hoped for.

On the other side, Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and featuring Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna, and Aamir Khan, has been steadily building buzz, especially in southern markets.

Its ensemble cast and Kanagaraj’s recent track record have raised expectations. However, missing out on IMAX may limit its ability to reach audiences who seek a more immersive experience.

In the end, while YRF’s IMAX deal gives War 2 a short-term edge in visibility, it doesn’t guarantee success especially if audience word-of-mouth reflects the disappointment seen in teaser reactions.

Coolie may lack the IMAX push, but if the content connects, it could still emerge strong. The real test will come after release, when the films go head-to-head purely on merit.
