After the long 8 months of the movie’s initial release, “Oppenheimer” finally drops in Japan. After receiving 7 Oscars with a lot of hope the makers got the chance to release it in the very place, which was destroyed 79 years ago.
For the sensitivity of the subject matter, the makers and the whole team were really scared about the release. But, the movie got mixed reviews. Some people said , “I waited the whole movie for the bomb dropping scene, but it never came”. Certainly, because the movie focuses on Oppenheimer’s life more.
Toshiyuki Mimaki who survived the blast, who is now the chairperson of the bomb survivors, said that he was really intrigued by J Robert Oppenheimer’s life and his research. With sadness in his voice he said, “What were the Japanese thinking, carrying out the attack on Pearl Harbor, starting a war they could never hope to win” .
The movie doesn’t portray what exactly happened after the dropping of the bomb, rather it delves deep into the physics part of it, which in my opinion is quite interesting .
Some viewers said, it doesn’t depict the horror of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, rather it focuses on other psychological aspects. Those who wanted Oppenheimer to be an anti war movie, they will be very disappointed . Some other moviegoers said that as the topic is a great interest of Japanese people as well, it also re ignites the trauma.
The director of Godzilla Minus One, Takashi Yamazaki said in an interview with Christopher Nolan that, Japan should make a movie as a reply to Oppenheimer and i want to be the one who makes, to which Nolan agreed wholeheartedly.
