Three Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders detained ahead of a protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar have been ordered to be released, party leader Ratna Singh said.
Abhijit Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ramkala were produced before an executive magistrate at Delhi Cantonment Police Station following their detention. The party had planned to hold a protest at Jantar Mantar on Saturday.
Delhi has tightened security for a second consecutive day after CJP national organisation in-charge Ajinkya Shinde called for another gathering at Jantar Mantar.
Around 30,000 police personnel and 200 companies of paramilitary forces are expected to be deployed. Security has also been stepped up at Delhi’s borders, railway stations, bus terminals and other sensitive locations. New Delhi has been divided into 20 zones, with senior police officers monitoring the situation.
Meanwhile, four journalists’ organisations, including the Press Club of India and the Indian Women’s Press Corps, have condemned the reported detention and alleged harassment of journalists covering Saturday’s protests.
The organisations alleged that some journalists were detained despite showing their press identity cards and that their phones and reporting equipment were seized. They have demanded the release of detained journalists and an apology from Delhi Police.
