George Miller’s attempt to revisit the post-apocalyptic saga of Mad Max was seen as one of the most ambitious projects of 2024. The movie, being a relude, features Anya Taylor Joy as the titular heroine. Kidnapped and ostracized by the cruel and wicked yet charming dementus played by Chris Hemsworth. The last movie, Mad Max: Fury Road, was nothing short of a spectacle. Maintaining that level of spectacle was a prerequisite. No wonder Furiosa had a budget of a whopping 168 million. Much to the dismay of the creators, the project might not be the most profitable of affairs for them.
On the contrary, Furiosa is facing tough competition from the Garfield Movie, and it is facing the tag of a commercial failure, barely carrying its collection to a total of 110 million. The underperformance of the movie comes as a surprise indeed, as it definitely received all the love from the critics. Furiosa got a generous score of 89% on rotten tomatoes.
Not only has the movie been a commercial failure, it has become the lowest-grossing Memorial Day weekend opening in nearly 30 years, with a meager 31 million in the United States. Perhaps the ambition behind the project burned just too bright, or maybe it was just bad timing. Anyhow, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga remains the anatomy of a failure.
