Obsession OTT Delayed: Theatrical Cinema is Still King!

Obsession horror film box office success

The phenomenal box-office run of Hollywood horror sensation Obsession has received another major boost. The film’s planned OTT premiere on Peacock, which was originally scheduled for June 2, has reportedly been postponed, allowing the movie to continue its theatrical run for a longer period.

According to reports, Obsession has been removed from NBCUniversal’s upcoming streaming schedule. Industry trackers now expect the film to enjoy a 45-day exclusive theatrical window, a privilege usually reserved for major studio blockbusters rather than low-budget horror films.

The OTT postponement comes at a time when Obsession continues to exceed expectations across the globe. The film is now reportedly on track to cross the $300 million mark worldwide, an extraordinary achievement considering its low production budget of just around $750,000.

The success story has extended to India as well. After creating waves in North America, Obsession opened strongly in the Indian market and collected approximately Rs. 9.25 crores gross during its first weekend. The film started with around Rs. 1.60 crores on Friday before witnessing significant growth on Saturday and Sunday despite competition from the IPL final.

Trade experts believe the film could comfortably cross Rs. 30 crores in India if it maintains a healthy hold during weekdays.

What makes the achievement even more remarkable is that Obsession is not backed by a major franchise or cinematic universe. Most successful Hollywood horror films in India are usually connected to brands like The Conjuring universe, making the performance of an original independent horror film even more impressive.

More importantly, it proves that Indian audiences are increasingly willing to support well-made genre films regardless of budget, scale, or franchise backing.

The decision to postpone the OTT release signals growing confidence from the studio and distributors. Instead of rushing the film to streaming, they appear keen to maximize theatrical revenues while audience demand remains exceptionally strong. The message is simple: as long as people continue buying tickets, there is little reason to shift the film to OTT.

With Avengers: Doomsday, The Odyssey, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day still scheduled to arrive later this year, 2026 is shaping up to be one of Hollywood’s strongest years at the Indian box office in recent memory.
