While competing with Barbie, nobody ever imagined that Oppenheimer would achieve such box-office success. Though it always had the luxury of being a Nolan film, it had to contend with the marketing genius of Barbie.
The film about the mad scientist Robert Oppenheimer was projected to earn not more than $200M during the early stages. However, as the run began, Oppenheimer started to obliterate predictions; in the opening, it grossed more than $80M.
One thing that worked in favor of Oppenheimer is its strong fanbase. They not only supported the movie with multiple watches but also helped it maintain a longer theatrical run in the market. Despite the July 21st release date, it is still enjoying a sweet box office run.
Maintaining its consistency, Oppenheimer has now crossed the $950M mark at the box office, making it the third most successful movie of the year. Even in terms of R-rated films, it claws its way to the second most successful film of the genre.
As Oppenheimer is set to release on the OTT space, the billion-dollar mark seems quite unachievable. However, with the award season approaching, a short re-release might give it a boost. Until then, the Nolan masterpiece Oppenheimer rests at a whopping $950M.
