Cultural appropriation in the name of gags just might have landed British TV host Andi Peters in trouble. Andi was presenting from Madame Tussaud’s museum where he referred to Popular Bollywood star and now a Hollywood house hold name, Priyanka Chopra as “Chianca Chop Free”.
He was soon interjected by his co host Adil Ray who said “Honestly, Andi. If you’re going to stand next to somebody at least work out what their name is. That’s Priyanka Chopra”, following which Andi received severe backlash after he made his statement worse by adding on to it by saying He knew who she was and limited the identity of the actress by stating she’s married to one of the Jonas Brothers.
Perhaps Andi can take a moment to appreciate the fact that Priyanka happens to be an inspiration for millons of girls who look up to her as an idol of positive feminism and hard work. Priyanka has made her mark more than once on the screen for her identity to be limited to being a wife to a popular singer. Some of the users over twitter came to the actress defence even stating “Someone needs to tell Andy Peters at least Priyanka Chopra has earned her place in Madame Tussaud’s because he hasn’t.”
Furthermore, Andi acknowledging her identity and still making that cheap quip just gave everyone a realisation that it was done deliberately. A true mark of racism and sexism at display. Andy may continue his “sarcasm” meanwhile, Chopra is looking forward towards her next appearance in Amazon Prime’s “Heads of State” alongside Idris Elba and John Cena.
