In an Instagram post filled with nostalgia and excitement, actor Channing Tatum has officially confirmed his involvement in the long-awaited live-action adaptation of ‘The Maxx.’ The adaptation, based on the Image Comics series created by Sam Keith, has been in the works for several years.
Tatum expressed his enthusiasm, reminiscing about his childhood connection with ‘The Maxx’ and its impact on his life. The actor revealed that during times when he was grounded and forbidden to watch TV, he would risk it all to sneak out of bed and watch the cartoon on MTV’s Oddities.
He acknowledged the profound effect the characters—The Maxx, Julie Winters, and Mr. Gone—had on shaping his perspective on life and the roles individuals play.
Created by Sam Keith, ‘The Maxx’ made its Image Comics debut in March 1993 and ran for 35 issues until 1998. The comic, set between the real world and an alternate reality known as “the Outback,” follows the life of Maxx, a homeless man in the real world, and a powerful, purple-skinned superhero in the Outback. The story revolves around his friendship with troubled social worker Julie Winters, who has an alter ego as the Jungle Queen.
The animated series, part of MTV’s Oddities program in 1995, garnered critical acclaim but was considered too dark and bizarre for mainstream audiences. Crystal Moselle, known for her work on documentaries like ‘The Wolfpack’ and ‘Sophia,’ is set to write and direct the live-action adaptation for Paramount Pictures.
The project, a joint venture between Tatum’s production company Free Association and Roy Lee’s Vertigo Entertainment, has undergone some changes since its announcement in 2019. Sam Kieth, the creator and writer of ‘The Maxx,’ is also set to produce alongside partner Tal Vigderson.
While a release date for the movie is yet to be announced, Tatum’s confirmation brings renewed excitement for fans who have been eagerly anticipating ‘The Maxx’ making its mark on the big screen. The story’s unique blend of real-world and fantastical elements, coupled with Tatum’s passion for the project, promises an engaging and thought-provoking cinematic experience for both longtime fans and new audiences alike.
