Wonka, being the chocolatier he is, is truly cooking up sweet and delicious box office numbers, especially with the festive season approaching. The film had an early release in 37 international markets this week, and the globe witnessed the delectable debut of Wonka, with excitement evident in the box office figures.
Paul King’s film, starring Timothée Chalamet, secured an additional $53.6 million in 77 international markets, bringing the offshore total to $112.4 million and the global box office to $151.4 million. Impressively, France led with $5.1 million, Australia had the second-biggest Warner Bros. opening weekend of 2023 with $4 million, and Italy’s $3.4 million start ranked No. 1. The film continues to exceed global expectations.
Warner Bros. invested $125 million in producing “Wonka,” excluding substantial global marketing expenses. Despite the musical’s non-franchise status, initial ticket sales are promising, attributed to the brand recognition from Roald Dahl’s novel and previous film adaptations. Timothée Chalamet’s star appeal, cultivated in both blockbusters like “Dune” and acclaimed indies, contributes to the movie’s success, especially in attracting family audiences.
The success of Wonka shows no signs of slowing down, making it the perfect alternative for kids during the festive season, despite competition from Aquaman. Although Aquaman will be present and fighting for its place, the sinking ship of DC won’t be enough to slow down Wonka.
