U.K. actors union Equity is bringing the strike overseas as they are planning to conduct a couple of rallies in London and Manchester. These rallies serve as a gesture to express their support for SAG-AFTRA’s cause.
London’s Leicester Square and Manchester’s Media City will be the hub of this rally and numerous speakers from the entertainment industry and trade union movement will be featured.
In a recent statement, Equity denotes that, “In our sister union’s fight we stand in unwavering solidarity, and we will not allow the U.K. to become a back door to undermine the strike,”
As soon as SAG started the strike, Equity was quick to come up with guidelines for its 50,000 members. They also made it clear that while Equity fully supports the strike, it is not legally permissible for them to participate in it due to the UK’s strict union laws, which prevent organizations from calling strikes.
The strike is leaving its mark on the entertainment industry as it puts a lot of things on pause. Even big movies like Oppenheimer took hits at the most crucial time of the promotion by cancelling a premiere.
Equity mentioned that the rallies on Friday, the 21st, are open for anyone who supports the striking SAG actors. Equity is also working closely with SAG regarding the strike and came out with the guidance as its American counterpart conforms to the actors strike.
