Over the last few years, Tollywood has been synonymous with big ticket pan Indian blockbusters. But this year, the trend has changed, albeit momentarily.
The top 5 grossers in Indian cinema this year are Leo, Jawan, Pathaan, Gadar 2, and Jailer.
The intersting note here is that two of these top 5 grossers are Tamil films and the other film, Jawan is directed by Tamil director Atlee. This is the highest grosser of the year. This year, Tamil cinema is associated with three highest grossers of 2023.
Incidentally, not a single Telugu film or a Telugu director is on the list. But the point to be noted is that there hasn’t been a notable pan Indian outing from Tollywood this year. The one film, Adipurush had a Bollywood director at the helm.
As a result, Tollywood didn’t have any representation at the list of the highest grossers of 2023.
Salaar will close out 2023 on a high but this film also has Prashanth Neel at the helm. So the credit will be shared and it won’t entirely go to Tollywood.
But 2024 looks highly prospective for Telugu cinema with the likes of Devara, Pushpa 2, Kalki, and other highly prospective films headed for release through the course of the year.
